Iwang Soewangsih dilahirkan pada tanggal 1 Januari 1931 di Serut, sekitar 6 km dari kota Garut, merupakan anak kedua dari enam bersaudara dari pasangan Bapak Djuharja Karjadimadja dan Ibu Marsiti.
